How to Round Up Decimals

Whether you are in a classroom or occupational setting, rounding numbers can be an essential skill used to solve and simplify mathematical equations and values. Numbers that extend multiple decimal places can be overwhelming, especially for children attempting to grasp the idea of solving problems with decimals. In order to make decimals manageable, rounding them up can create a more manageable number.

  Find out how many decimal places you need to round up to. For example, if you want to round to only one decimal place of the number 3.56, count one digit to the right of the decimal point, which is 5. The number will be the number you will have to change after the rounding process.

  Examine the digit to the right of the number found in Step 1. This will determine whether to round up or down. If the number is five or greater, you will round up. If the number is four or lower, you will round down. For example, if the number is 3.568 and you need to round to the nearest tenth, the number that will decide whether you round up or down is the number 6. Since 6 is greater than 5, you will round up.

  Round the number to the appropriate amount of decimal places. For example, if you are rounding the number 3.568 to the nearest two decimal places, your answer would be 3.57.
