How to Measure Square Feet With a Measuring Wheel

Determining the square footage of a large area can be difficult if you are using a measuring tape or yard stick. Fortunately, a measuring wheel makes light work of such tasks. The wheel includes a calibrated wheel and counter, and as you push it along the counter will display the distance traveled. Using simple mathematics, you can measure and determine the square feet of a particular area by multiplying its length by its width.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the wheel counter units to feet and press "Reset" to start the counter at zero.

    • 2

Determine the starting point for your measurement. Choose a corner or far tip. You will be measuring the length and width of your area.

    • 3

Stand, holding the handle of the measuring wheel, with the wheel sitting evenly on the ground.

    • 4

Push the wheel forward, walking at a steady pace. If the ground has obstacles, be sure to move carefully and keep contact with the ground.

    • 5

Stop when you reach the end of the area. Lift the measuring wheel and view the counter. Record this value.

    • 6

Reset the counter to zero then replace the wheel onto the ground.

    • 7

Push the measuring wheel along the ground in the direction perpendicular to your previous measurement. For example, if you just measured the distance down, you will now be measuring the distance across.

    • 8

Stop when you reach the end of the area. Lift the measuring wheel and view the counter. Record this value.

    • 9

Multiply your value from Step 5 by the value recorded from Step 8 (length by width). This result will by the total square footage of a rectangular plot.
