How to Calculate Constant Speed

Constant speed refers to how fast an object changes its position. Using the formula of distance traveled over time, you determine the speed of that object. When an object's speed stays the same, it neither accelerates or decelerates and has a constant speed. Constant speed differs from velocity because speed uses total distance traveled whereas velocity takes into account direction.

  Divide the distance traveled over the time to find the constant speed.

  Practice with an example of a race car which travels 20 miles in 10 minutes. Divide 20/10 to find a constant speed of 2 miles per minute.

  Determine the constant speed in miles per hour by multiplying miles per minute by 60. For the example, 2 x 60 = 120 miles per hour for the constant speed of the race car in the example.
