How to Measure the Drill Hole Depth of Oil Rigs With Ultrasonic Measurements

The operation of oil rigs is closely monitored by state and federal government agencies. These agencies set specific regulations which influence operating procedures, allowed drilling and safety precautions. As part of regulatory adherence and charting of operation, drill rigs can measure the drill hole depth using ultrasonic borehole depth-gauges. These gauges are expensive and require complementing software to interpret the images and measurements.

Things You'll Need

  • Electronic cartridge
  • Measurement sonde
  • In-line centralizer
  • Interchangeable rotating sub (transducer)
  • UBI presentation software
  • Computer

Instructions

    • 1

Install the UBI presentation software on your computer according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

    • 2

Double-click the application icon when the installation process is complete. Allow the software to load.

    • 3

Select the interchangeable rotating sub that fits the borehole size. The transducer will be located inside the sub.

    • 4

Connect the measurement sonde to the interchangeable rotating sub.

    • 5

Slide the in-line centralizer onto the measurement sonde. The centralizer will slide down the sonde and be separated from the sub by a space equal to the height of the sub.

    • 6

Connect the free end of the measurement sonde to the electronic cartridge.

    • 7

Connect the cartridge to your computer network.

    • 8

Access the transducer information on the software program.

    • 9

Set the transducer rotation to a counterclockwise motion.

    • 10

Set the transducer frequency to 250 kHz. View the images. If the images are clear, continue with the imaging process. If the images are not clear, switch the frequency to 500 kHz.

    • 11

Select the spiral plot option on the imaging software. This option will display the start depth, stop depth, size of the hole, angle of the hole from the transducer and drilling angle. The measurements will be displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

    • 12

Lower the transducer slowly through the body of the hole until you reach the bottom of the hole. Record the readings on the software.

    • 13

Slowly raise the transducer. Clean and store the components as directed by the manufacturer.
