How to Make Your Own Driveway Salt

Cities commonly use salt as a way to melt snow faster to clear traffic pathways. Instructions

    • 1

Fill a pot to the halfway point with water. Place the pot on the stove and turn the heat to high.

    • 2

Start pouring in regular table salt into the water. The salt dissolves. As the water begins to boil, continue adding more salt until the salt stops dissolving. This means that the salt and water have reached a saturation point.

    • 3

Watch your salt crystals begin to form as the water evaporates. Remove the pot from the burner when you have a few hardened pieces of hard salt. Allow to cool.

    • 4

Break the crystals apart into smaller bits and place in a bucket.

    • 5

Repeat the process until you have enough crystallized rock salts to spread over your driveway.
