How to Grow Bismuth

From creating geometric shapes to simple blocks, the chemical element bismuth has been used since ancient times and was confused with other soft metals such as tin and lead. While in the modern era bismuth has been differentiated from its other elemental counterparts, it is no less valuable. As the crystals are simple to grow, bismuth creates the perfect learning material for discussing the elements or simply as an organic crafting project.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your hands in to the metalworking gloves. Place the protective eyeglasses on your face. Melted bismuth can burn you severely.

    • 2

Place the bismuth in the large bowl and set it on the stove. Turn the element to high heat. Keep the bowl on the stove until the bismuth is completely melted and a thin film of impurities has formed on top.

    • 3

Set the smaller metal container on the stove. Turn the element to high and heat the container for one to two minutes, until it is hot.

    • 4

Remove both bowls to a heat-safe surface. Pour the metal from the large container into the smaller one. Keeping the film of impurities in the first container by carefully pouring the metal from underneath the film.

    • 5

Allow the bismuth to solidify slightly -- between 30 seconds to one minute. Pour the excess liquid bismuth back in to the larger bowl and allow the remaining bismuth to completely cool in the medium bowl. These will be your crystals.

    • 6

Break out the crystals from the bottom of the pot.
