Things You'll Need
Instructions
Find a stone that already has a shape roughly similar to the purpose you have in mind. For example, if you want to make a stone knife, you may want a narrow and thin stone. If you are planning to make an arrowhead, you might want a stone that is already somewhat triangular. This saves time in the crafting process.
Use the chipping tool to begin breaking small chips from your chosen stone to get it closer to the desired shape. You can make a chipping tool from another stone or from scrap wood, but you will probably see the quickest results if you use a manufactured chipping tool from a hardware store.
Identify the point that you wish to sharpen, such as the blade if you are making a stone knife or the end if you are making a stake, and file it with the flaking tool. The principle here is similar to if you were sharpening a kitchen knife. The flaking tool will remove small flakes from the chipped edge and leave a sharp surface in its wake. You will need to apply some pressure for maximum results.
