How to Make a Paper Mache Volcano Without Cardboard

Approximately 500 volcanoes are active worldwide, making them a phenomenon worth studying. Whether you aim to create an award-winning project or simply have fun at home learning about natural science, the process to demonstrate naturally occurring chemical reactions within volcanoes is equally satisfying. Using household materials to operate your volcano and minimizing waste by not using cardboard makes your working volcano model all the more rewarding.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a cookie sheet flat on your work surface. Set a clean, dry bottle in the center of the cookie sheet.

    • 2

Cut a strip of chicken wire as wide as your soda bottle is tall and approximately four times as wide. Mold the wire into the shape of a volcano. Leave plenty of width at the bottom in order for the wire frame to stand upright, and leave an opening at the top slightly larger than the mouth of the bottle.

    • 3

Use a large spoon to combine 6 cups of flour and 2 cups of water in a medium-sized bowl. Mix until ingredients are thick, not pasty or runny, and all lumps are gone. Add more of either ingredient as required.

    • 4

Cut newspaper into 2 inch wide strips. Dip each strip in mixture until coated and adhere to wire frame. Cover entire frame with coated strips of newspaper, but be sure not to cover bottle mouth. Let dry completely. Paint paper mache to look like a volcano.

    • 5

Drop red food coloring into 1/2 cup water one drop at a time and let dissolve. Continue adding until you achieve the color desired. Use a funnel to pour the solution and baking soda into the mouth of the bottle. Add drops of dish washing soap directly into bottle.

    • 6

Add vinegar gradually to the bottle using the funnel. Step back to watch the reaction safely.
