Things You'll Need
Instructions
Put unpolished basalt, 4 tablespoons of coarse abrasive grit and enough water to just cover the basalt into the rock tumbler. Put the tumbler on and run it for seven days. Once the seven days are up, wash the basalt and clean out the rock tumbler.
Return the basalt to the rock tumbler and add 4 tablespoons of medium abrasive grit and water to just cover the stones. Turn on the tumbler and run it for seven days. When the seven days are over, the basalt should look shiny when it's wet. Remove and clean the basalt and wash the rock tumbling machine.
Place the basalt back into the rock tumbler with 3 tablespoons of prepolish abrasive grit and water to just cover the rocks. Tumble the basalt in the rock tumbler for 10 days. Remove and wash the basalt after the 10 days are over and clean out the tumbler.
Place the basalt back into the rock tumbler and add 2 tablespoons of rock polish compound and enough water to just cover the basalt. Run the tumbler for 14 days. Remove and wash the basalt. Wash out the rock tumbler.
Put the basalt back into the rock tumbler. This is the final stage of polishing, which is known as burnishing. Add around 1 tablespoon of ivory bar soap, sliced thinly, plus enough water to just cover the basalt. Turn on the rock tumbler and run it for three to four hours. Remove and rinse the basalt. It should now be fully polished.
