How to Polish Fused Silica

Fused silica is a compound of silica sand commonly used to create glass. While in its finished form, fused silica is practically clear, a rough ingot of fused silica may contain imperfections as well as a rough surface texture. In order to polish fused silica, you'll have to use a ceramic cutter and silica-based polish to create an even surface. In addition, it should be noted that fused silica is extremely hard, and therefore prone to shattering. You must polish rough fused silica carefully for this reason.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fused silica to the approximate shape you want using the ceramic cutting tools. If the work piece is small, such as the size of your fist, you can easily use a handheld rotary tool. If it is larger, however, it is a good idea to use a bench-mounted cutting wheel. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection when cutting the silica in case it shatters.

    • 2

Polish the cut fused silica with a silica-impregnated or diamond-impregnated polishing cloth. You will be able to attain a very high level of polish on your work piece simply by rubbing the polishing cloth over it.

    • 3

Apply a small amount of silica-based polishing compound to a clean rag and vigorously rub the surface until you have reached the level of brightness and clarity that you desire. Once you have polished the fused silica completely, rinse it off with water to clean away the polishing compound.
