Instructions
Run a soft cloth over the surface of the ferrite. Note any snags that occur while rubbing the ferrite with the cloth. A snag or rough area on the ferrite can indicate a crack in the surface of the metal.
Check the cloth for any flaky particles. If the ferrite starts to flake, this can indicate that a crack has formed or that a crack might start to form soon.
Inspect the surface of the ferrite with a magnifying glass in a well-lit room. A bright reading light can help identify any cracks in the surface. Bright daylight can also reveal cracks you might not be able to see indoors. Pay special attention to any joints in the metal or any areas where the metal has a screw or bolt in it.
Cease use of the ferrite if it has cracks. Return it to the store for a new one, or discard it and purchase a replacement. Cracks in the surface show weakness in the material, which can cause problems with any ferrite use.
