Free gold is rare in nature. Gold is more often found in different kinds of rock. The gold bearing rock is called ore. Some types of ore contain sulfides. To concentrate the gold in the rock, bacteria are stimulated to break down the sulfides. This process goes faster up if the ore is heated through a process called roasting. It starts the process of freeing the gold from the ore by turning the sulfur to sulfur dioxide, which is a gas and can be vented off.
