How to Extract Sulfur

Sulfur is a chemical element, referred to in chemistry and on the periodic table by the abbreviation "S." The element has an atomic number of 16 and is a very common element found in water in the form of hydrogen sulfide. One of the easiest ways of extracting sulfur for use is to extract it from water.

Things You'll Need

  • Chlorine liquid or pellets
  • Catalytic carbon filter
  • Manganese greensand filter

Instructions

    • 1

Use the chlorine pellets or liquid when the pH level of the water is between six and eight. Doing this will oxidize the sulfur in the water, making it easier to extract.

    • 2

Pour the tap water into any container. Any hydrogen sulfide in the water will start to become gaseous.

    • 3

Pour the water through the manganese greensand filter. This process will remove manganese and sulfur since the sulfur becomes oxidized and turns into solid particles. These particles will be filtered out.

    • 4

Use the catalytic carbon filter only when the hydrogen sulfide level is lower than 0.3 milligrams per liter. The carbon will attract the sulfur, extracting it from the water.
