Differences Between Quartz & Granite

Quartz and granite are found in the earth's surface. Both are present all over the world and are used regularly for items from statues to building products. In the past 10 years, quartz and granite have gained a reputation as high-end materials for countertops in homes. They are both attractive, strong and resistant to heat. While similar, examining both closely illustrates their differences.
  1. Natural State

    • Quartz must be retrieved from the earth and then processed.

In their natural state, quartz and granite come from the same place -- the earth's surface. The main difference between the two is that granite is an actual rock, while quartz is a mineral. Granite is an igneous rock naturally formed by the solidification of magma. Granite does contain quartz, along with other components, such as feldspar. Quartz, on the other hand, is a mineral deposit found in metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks, such as granite.

    Manufactured State

    • There is a difference in how granite and quartz are manufactured as building material. Granite is considered a natural stone, because slabs are cut directly from the earth, polished and sold. Quartz, on the other hand, is considered an engineered stone. Quartz is taken from the earth and processed with other components, which change its look and color. In general, there is more variation in color with quartz than there is with granite.

    Uses of Quartz

    • Granite and quartz vary in their uses. Quartz is a crystalline mineral, which makes it good for carvings and jewelry. Quartz can also be found in electronic products and is used for glassmaking and as a gemstone. Because it makes a strong sand, it is also used for sandblasting and as foundry sand. The sand can also be found on beaches, volleyball courts, golf courses and children's sandboxes.

    Uses of Granite

    • Mount Rushmore is carved in the side of a granite mountain.

Granite is used on a larger scale because huge slabs can be directly cut out of the earth. It is a hard stone that is common in the construction industry. Granite is used for buildings, pavement, bridges, flooring stones, monuments and gravestones. In cities, granite can be seen in many places, from the blocks of buildings to sidewalk curbs. Granite is also famous for several natural-made wonders, including the cliffs in Yosemite National Park, Stone Mountain in Georgia and Pike's Peak in Colorado.
