Choose your light source. In order to use a spectroscope correctly, it is important to choose the right light source. Check your chosen light source by looking at it through the spectroscope. When you look at the light source, if all you see are vertical lines, then this isn't the best light source to use. Use an incandescent flashlight with a very strong beam of light.
Place the stone on top of the flashlight if using the transmission method. Place a ring of putty around the stone to block excess light. For this method, you should only use the light that comes through the stone. Placing a light-blocking material around the stone will limit outside lighting. Hold the flashlight with the stone in one hand, and hold the spectroscope over it in the other hand.
Place the stone on a flat surface if you are using the reflective method. Hold the flashlight on one side of the stone, and the spectroscope on the other side. Allow the light to reflect off of the table and into the spectroscope. Use a stand for the flashlight or attach it to a book or other object with putty to leave one hand free. Aim the spectroscope toward the brightest beam reflected from the flashlight.
Adjust the angle of the spectroscope and the distance between the spectroscope and the stone to view the different spectrums of light. Use two different light sources if one is not bright enough. Practice using the spectroscope with a different variety of stones. Check the stone to make sure it has not gotten too warm from the light source. If it has, allow it to cool before using it again.
