How to Repair Scuffed Gems

Gems can become scuffed if improperly stored or worn while performing physical labor. Since scuff marks are typically only surface deep, scuffed gems can be repaired with the help of a buffing cloth or a gem stone tumbling machine if the gem is meant to be natural and smooth. Gems that have been cut should not be placed in a gem stone tumbler as it will likely ruin the cut in the gem.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a jeweler's rouge cloth online or from a jewelry store. A jeweler's rouge cloth is a two-sided cloth that contains a compound on one side that will clean and remove tarnish from metals while the other side holds micro-abrasives that buff and shine gems.

    • 2

Rub the gemstone gently with the micro-abrasive side of the rouge cloth until the scuff mark disappears. As long as the scuff has not resulted in a deep scratch, it should buff right out.

    • 3

Take the gem to a professional jeweler if deep scratches occurred due to scuffing. Attempting to remove them yourself can ruin the finish.

    • 4

Refrain from washing the jeweler's rouge cloth as it will render it useless. The cloth should be able to withstand wear and tear for about two years.

    • 5

Polish gems that are not connected to metal jewelry with the use of a rock tumbler. Tumblers can be purchased online for around $100. Follow the instructions that come with your tumbler to ensure damage is not done to your gem.
