Industrial Projects
Steel cutting is performed in the process of many steel building or steel working applications. In building and manufacturing, steel cutting is used to size steel framework or shape steel component parts. Steel cutting may occur on a construction site or during the manufacturing process. At home, steel-cutting projects can include construction of outdoor sheds, cutting steel pipe for home repair and cutting steel wire.
Toolmaking
Saw blades, knives and some garden tools are cut from steel. Steel-cutting enthusiasts may create their own outdoor or indoor tools. Common outdoor tools include rakes and saw blades cut from sheet metal. Creation of personal eating utensils and designing drawer pulls are special projects for indoor tools.
Wall Hangings
Home wall decorations can be cut from steel sheet metal. One form of decorative steel cutting is to cut an image, such as a landscape setting or flowers, into a sheet of steel to create the appearance of a framed piece of art. Backlighting the sheet emphasizes the cut out images for dynamic effect. Simply hanging the sheet in contrast with the paint color of the wall provides the same dynamism.
Outdoor Decorations
Silhouettes cut from sheet metal are used as garden and exterior home decorations, but may also be used as wall hangings. Unlike designs cut from steel sheets, silhouettes are cut from sheet metal to look like the shadow of a life-sized, or in some cases, larger-than-life objects. This project is simple to produce because it requires only the outline of the image rather than the full detail.
