Instructions
Choose a location for your display. Wood tables, shelves and bookcases work well for housing a rock collection. Be sure that the location is spacious enough to add new rocks as your collection grows.
Purchase a glass display case for your most important rocks; this prevents dust and other debris from getting into the rock crevices. Glass jars with lids are effective for storing rare rocks.
Place a backdrop behind the display area. A solid-colored background such as black, blue or white looks best. Affix a piece of cloth or quality paper behind the collection.
Choose similar-sized rocks for your collection, giving a feeling of continuity as they rocks have in an outdoor setting. Use either a trim saw or a chisel and mallet to trim off excess parts of rocks that are too large. A common size for a rock for display is 4 by 3 by 2 inches.
Record the information on each type of rock in a notebook. Include pertinent information such as the name of each rock, and where and when it was found. Print out small labels to place alongside each rock; this is helpful after your collection has grown in size.
Arrange the rocks in a pleasing order. Keep similar types and colors of rocks together.
