Birthstones and Their Mystical History
The history of birthstones is quite old, as ancient Romans, among other cultures, believed certain minerals had powers that were strongest during a certain month of the year. For those who could not afford to purchase a mineral for every month of the year, a compromise would be afforded by purchasing only the mineral associated with special powers during the wearer's birth month. Aaron, the high priest and brother of Moses in the Old Testament, wore twelve gemstones engraved with the names of the Twelve Tribes of Israel on his breastplate. The twelve birthstones commonly accepted today are similar to Aaron's gems.
