Forms of Silver

Silver is a soft white metal that is denser than copper. There are a variety of forms of silver that are used for numerous applications, including coins, jewelry and teeth fillings. Silver is sometimes found in nature in metallic form, but can also be chemically manipulated by adding various compounds to the mineral.
  1. Silver Coins

    • Since 1896, the United States Mint has minted silver eagle coins that are made up of 99.9% pure silver. The silver dollar has been minted and issued since 1794. The composition of U.S. silver coins has changed because of a worldwide silver shortage. Silver was eliminated from the dime and quarter. Some commemorative coins are made of silver and sell at a premium. Profits from the sale of commemorative coins are used to help reduce the national debt.

    Silver Nitrate

    • Silver nitrate is used to cauterize sores and wounds. It can heal skin ulcers, treats burns and remove warts. It converts to metallic silver when it comes into contact with organic matter. Silver nitrate injures bacteria and fights infections. It is available in sticks or as a topical solution. Some side effects may include skin irritation and skin discoloration. Store silver nitrate at room temperature and protect it from light.

    Silver Ion

    • Silver ion is an antiseptic. The antimicrobial affects of metallic ions such as silver have been well documented. Silver is probably the best best known because it has bio-activity at low concentrations. Organic and inorganic silver salts are used to treat infections. A silver-polymer combination is sometimes used on wound dressings to slow the release of silver ions. Silver ions wound dressings are effective treatments for ulcers and other types of serious infections.

    Silver Bromide

    • Silver Bromide is used in photography. A thin layer of gelatin forms an emulsion on a sheet of cellulose acetate. The silver bromide is light-sensitive, and when exposed to light the decomposed silver bromide registers an image. Undeveloped grains of silver bromide are removed with a theosulfate ion solution. The negative is then washed, leaving the image. Silver bromide is used in the production of photographic films and plates.
