Interior Design
All varieties of sandstone are commonly used for interior design elements. Stone floor slabs, fireplaces, arches, shelves and window sills can all be fashioned from this material. The variety of colors that sandstone comes in make it an ideal accent in the home as it can be matched to existing features.
Exterior Design
Many varieties of sandstone are resistant to the weather making it a more useful exterior design stone than marble or limestone which can erode. Columns, pillars, archways and other features are often sculpted of sandstone. Once more, its varying colors mean the sandstone can be selected to match your landscaping.
Sculpture
The granular structure of sandstone means its easier to shape and carve than other stone. It also means it is a good material to sculpt for artistic purposes. Sandstone figurines have been found in Asia and Australia which were carved by native populations, usually depicting gods or idols.
Other Uses
Apart from its use in larger or grand design elements, sandstone can also be utilized for smaller decorative items and even has some more practical uses. Coasters, flower pots and work surfaces can all be made from sandstone. Before the advent of electricity, sandstone was also used to make grinding wheels to sharpen tools and weapons.
