Instructions

    • 1

Stack two liter soda bottles on top of each other and tape them together with duct tape. Use the measuring stick to measure 5 feet, which will be the height of your volcano. Use scissors to make the opening wider on the top soda bottle, because you will need to fill the inside of the bottle with ingredients to make the volcano erupt.

    • 2

Place the stack of soda bottles on the flat piece of cardboard. Use duct tape to attach the top of the two liter bottles to the edge of the cardboard. Make the distance between each piece of tape about 1/2 an inch.

    • 3

Make your paper mache mixture. In a large bowl, mix the glue, water and flour. Stir well until there are no lumps.

    • 4

Dip strips of newspaper in the paper mache mixture, removing excess liquid with your fingers. Place the strips of newspaper on top of the pieces of duct tape. Repeat this process until you have built the basic shape of the volcano. Remember to leave the top of the volcano open so that you can add ingredients to make it erupt. Volcanoes are not uniform in shape and size, so it is okay if the volcano mold is not symmetrical. Allow the mold to dry for several days before applying paint.

    • 5

Paint the volcano using brown and green acrylic paint. You may want to paint red or orange lava near the top of the volcano opening.

    • 6

Make the volcano erupt. Mix the vinegar with several drops of red food coloring and pour it into the top of the volcano. When you and your audience are ready for the eruption, quickly add the baking soda and stand back. Clean the volcano with a wet rag and repeat the eruption process, if desired.
