How to Test for Calcite With Vinegar

Formed by ground precipitation and surface waters, calcite, or calcium carbonate, is a common mineral found in many areas of the world. Calcite comes in many appearances, from a clear square shape to a dirty gray cluster of spikes. The range of appearances can make it difficult for the average person to identify calcite by appearance alone. Test the specimen for calcite by using an efficient acid test. The test uses basic materials and is safe for people of all ages.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather a sample. Take a rock you suspect to contain calcite and place it in a dish. If the sample is too large to move, you do not need to use a dish.

    • 2

Prepare your acid solution. Fill a liquid medicine dropper with undiluted white vinegar.

    • 3

Squeeze two to three drops of white vinegar onto your sample. If calcite is present, the vinegar should begin to bubble immediately.

    • 4

Rinse the rock with clean water after the test. Depending on the rock, the vinegar may cause corrosion if left to sit for an extended period of time.
