How to Make a Blue Crystal

Crystals are sometimes associated with expensive drinkware or home décor, but not all crystals are valuable in terms of money. Homegrown crystals are possible to grow with some common ingredients found in almost any household kitchen. Depending on the materials used for this project, the crystals may have a clear to cloudy white appearance. It's just as easy, however, to grow crystals with a bright blue color.

Instructions

    • 1

Add 1 tbsp. of Epsom salt and ¼ cup of hot water in a cup. Stir the solution until the salt dissolves.

    • 2

Drop five to 10 drops of blue food coloring into the water. The crystals will retain much of the color from the water.

    • 3

Cut a piece of black construction paper into a 9-inch circle. Set the construction paper in the bottom of a disposable 9-inch pie pan.

    • 4

Pour the salt water solution into the pie pan to saturate the paper.

    • 5

Set the pie pan outside in a sunny location. Blue crystals will form as the water evaporates.
