How to Paint a Bee Rock

Paint a rock to resemble a bee. Mix it up by using nontraditional colors, such as blue, pink, red or orange. These hand painted bee rocks are weather resistant, so place them outdoors scattered throughout your garden or flower bed for a whimsical touch. Bring the painted rocks indoors by filling a glass bowl full with brilliant bees and placing it on your coffee table for a conversation piece. Or, add an unexpected feature to a flower arrangement by nestling a bee rock in between the stems of the flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash a round river rock with hot soapy water to remove any dirt. Dry completely.

    • 2

Paint the entire rock with white acrylic paint to serve as the base color. Let the paint dry.

    • 3

Cover the white paint with a coat of acrylic paint in any color you want for your bee, such as blue, pink, red or orange, and let dry.

    • 4

Draw a line across the middle of the rock with a pencil. Decide which end of the rock you want for the back end and continue drawing lines around the rock spaced 1/2-inch apart all the way to the end of the rock.

    • 5

Paint 1/8-inch-long, thin lines perpendicular across the pencil line in the middle of the rock using black paint and a fine-pointed paint brush. Paint the lines close together so they look like hairs on the bee. Repeat this painting method on the remaining lines drawn on the bee's body. Let the black paint dry.

    • 6

Mix a small amount of water with white acrylic paint. Turn the rock on the left side. Paint a thin oval down the right side of the rock with watered down white paint and fill the oval in with the paint. Flip the rock over to the left side and paint an identical-size oval with the white paint, and fill it in.

    • 7

Hot glue two googly eyes to the solid-colored end of the rock. Cut a black chenille stem in half. Roll one end of each stem into a small loop. Attach the straight ends of the stems to the top of the rock, just behind the eyes, using hot glue.
