How to Convert Grams to Karats

A karat is commonly referred to as a carat. It's a unit of mass used to measure gemstones and pearls. Jewelers often use carats to measure the mass and assess the value of diamonds, pearls and other precious jewelry. Grams and carats are both measurements of mass and are simple to convert. Knowing the conversion process can be helpful in understanding the value of a carat when you purchase a diamond ring or a pearl necklace.

Instructions

    • 1

Memorize the uniform basic rule that 1 carat is equivalent to 0.2 g.

    • 2

Multiply the number of grams by 5 to convert to carats. For example, if a diamond weighs 3 g, multiply it by 5. This means that the diamond weighs 15 carats.

    • 3

Multiply the number by 0.2 grams to check your calculation. For example, multiply 15 carats by 0.2 and the answer is 3 g.

    • 4

Verify your answer using an online grams-to-carats calculator (see Resources).
