Things You'll Need
Instructions
Place an unfolded pair of old denim jeans out in front of you. Straighten the jeans out to where the seams are all even. Plug in the iron and let it heat up for five minutes. Iron the jeans flatly to press the seams.
Measure from the waistband of the jeans, with them fastened, to just beneath the curve of the hip and buttock area of the jeans. This should land about 1 inch from the seam of the crotch. Cut straight across from one side of the jeans to the other at this mark. This removes the legs, creating a pair of super short, shorts.
Snip the seam that holds the crotch together. This creates a skirt-like shape but with an awkward strip of fabric hanging down in the middle on both the front and backside of the material. Carefully snip these excess dangling strips to make the skirt even all the way around. Only cut about 1 inch.
Measure the circumference of the bottom of the skirt. Snip a strip of plaid material measuring this length but 2 inches in width.
Squeeze a line of fabric glue along the center of this plaid strip of fabric. Do this on the side that isn't bold in color, with the right side facing downward.
Fold the glued side of the fabric strip over the unhemmed edge of the skirt, all the way around. This creates a hem of a contrasted color from the denim material. Let it dry for 20 minutes.
Attach safety pins to the plaid fabric hem in various spots. This is where you can get creative and put the safety pins anywhere on the skirt. The point is to make the skirt look distressed and punky.
