Instructions for a Magic Crystal Growing Kit

Crystals are a type of solid structure whose atoms have formed together in a three-dimensional repeating pattern. Crystals are formed when a material is dissolved in water and individual particles of the material begin to connect with each other. As they begin to get larger, they will attract more material until they have formed a solid mass and crystallized. Magic Crystal Growing Kits are sold at science museums so that children may grow a crystal in just a few days at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the plastic bag that contains the crystal growing chemicals in your crystal growing kit. Collect about 1/8 teaspoon of these crystals and set them aside in a small glass.

    • 2

Measure about 68 milliliters water with a measuring glass, boil this up in a saucepan on the stove. Once the water has boiled, pour it into the small plastic cup containing the crystal particles. Stir the mixture together with the wooden spatula until the contents of the crystal packet have completely dissolved in the water and you see no more floating particles.

    • 3

Place the two small rocks inside the small plastic container.

    • 4

Pour the hot liquid from the cup onto the rocks in the container. Allow about one third of an inch between the rim of the container and the liquid. Leave the mixture to cool until it is lukewarm.

    • 5

Get the crystals that were saved in Step 1. Drop them through the water so that they land on the rocks.

    • 6

Place the lid on the container and put the container somewhere where it will not be disturbed and where its temperature will not fluctuate. A good location might be high up on a bookshelf in the living room or bedroom or on a top shelf in the bedroom closet.

    • 7

Let the crystals grow for three to four days. If you like the look of the crystals, remove the rocks and crystals from the solution after this time. If you want the crystals to grow larger, let the water naturally evaporate for two to three days longer. Remove the crystals before they start to poke out through the water.
