How to Create Crystals for Science Projects

Crystals occur in nature when molecules pair up in such a way that they form repeating patterns. When this pattern is repeated over and over again with countless molecules, a crystal forms. Making homemade crystals as a science project is a great way to teach kids about the fundamental building blocks of the universe. It also is easy, utilizing a number of ingredients that can be found around the house, along with the time investment necessary to wait for your crystal garden to grow.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 to 3 sponges
  • 1 cup laundry bluing
  • 1 metal pan
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tbsp. ammonia
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 mixing cup

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sponges on the pan and place the pan on an open counter or table where it is fully exposed.

    • 2

Mix the salt and water in your mixing cup until most of the salt is dissolved.

    • 3

Mix the ammonia and bluing material into the mixing cup so that the four ingredients form a thick solution.

    • 4

Spread the resulting solution on top of the sponges.

    • 5

Wait 18 to 24 hours. By the end of this period, you should be able to see the beginnings of crystals forming on the sponges.

    • 6

Add saltwater as needed over the ensuing days to ensure that the crystals continue to grow.
