How to Make a Gold Bar

Gold is formed into many different shapes. A gold bar can be cast with reasonable preparation. The size of the bar is a function of the gold available to cast into the bar. Since gold has a specific gravity of 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter, by knowing the weight of the gold available, it is simple to deduce the size of bar that can be cast.

Things You'll Need

  • Mold of bar to be cast
  • Crucible
  • Acetylene torch
  • Heat resistant gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh the gold available to turn into a bar. Make sure that the weight is obtained in grams. Divide the weight in grams by 19.32. This results in the volume of gold that can be cast in cubic centimeters.

    • 2

Obtain a mold for the desired volume of gold. There are many providers of molds to source a mold from. Graphite molds help cast bars with a nicer finish.

    • 3

Place the gold in a clean crucible. Don heat-resistant gloves. Heat the gold in the crucible with an acetylene torch until molten. Pure gold melts at about 1750 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Grip the crucible with the metal tongs. Pour molten gold from the crucible into the mold. Allow the gold to cool before handling it.
