How to Take the Salt out of Ocean Water

Ocean salt is a mineral similar to calcium, zinc and magnesium. Distillation is the process of removing minerals and metals from water through causing the water to evaporate and condense onto a desired surface. While distillation machines are available, you can take the salt out of ocean water with a few simple items.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a kitchen pot halfway with ocean water.

    • 2

Place the brick vertically upright in the pot and set the bowl on top of the brick. Make sure that water cannot come into contact with the bowl.

    • 3

Place the pot's lid upside down onto the pot and bring the water to a boil.

    • 4

Pour some ice onto the lid to further facilitate condensation.

    • 5

Empty your bowl every 15 minutes; this is pure distilled water.

    • 6

Boil the water until it is gone, letting the pot's contents cook completely. The crystals found along the sides of the bowl are the minerals found in the water, including salt.
