How to Toss a Stone

Stone tossing is a Scottish sport that requires the thrower to launch a stone as far as possible. Stone tossing is still played in Highland games across the world. Today, the thrower usually wears a traditional Scottish kilt and uses a 16-pound stone. The game is competitive in nature and throw results are measured with precision.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the measuring tape on one side of the throwing field. Start it at the throw line and run it down the throwing field in a perfectly straight line. Your tape should be at least 75 feet long.

    • 2

Pick up the stone and move to the start line. Place your dominant foot with the outside edge touching the start line. Place your feet shoulder width apart. Place your other foot so that it is pointed downfield.

    • 3

Lift the stone up on the palm of your dominant hand. Bring it up and over your shoulder and rotate your forearm so that your fingers are pointed behind you. Bring the stone 6 inches above your shoulder.

    • 4

Push off with your dominate leg when you are signaled to go. Run as fast and as hard as you can toward the throw line. Plant your front leg firmly in the ground right in front of the throw line as you approach it. As your body's momentum swings forward because of the sudden stop, move your palm to a 45 degree angle by bringing your fingers and the stone slightly upward.

    • 5

Straighten out your dominate elbow and push your forearm forward with all your power. As you do this, use the palm of your hand to push and launch the stone. Record the distance of your toss.
