Add the carrier oil and distilled water to one of the 2-qt. glass bowls. Microwave the bowl for three minutes, or until the liquid is boiling hot. Carrier oils vary in benefits, texture, color and scent. An excellent carrier oil that is smooth, thin and scentless is coconut carrier oil. It is often found in cosmetics and lotions on the commercial market as well.
Microwave a second bowl containing the emulsifying wax. This ingredient allows water and oil to mix together. It can be found at craft and hobby supply shops or online. Microwave the bowl for three to four minutes, or until it is melted into a thin liquid.
Using the hand mixer, beat the oil and water mixture on a medium speed and pour in the melted emulsifying wax. This will immediately form a frothy, white solution.
Beat the mixture for five continuous minutes. As you beat it, it will thicken to a consistency similar to thin pancake batter.
Pour the melted lotion base into the lotion bottle you have selected. Administer the vitamin E and essential oil. Vitamin E extract is a natural preservative that prevents mold from growing in the lotion. The essential oil blend you choose is entirely up to you. For instance, coffee bean essential oil smells just like a fresh brewed pot of coffee and gives a stimulating sensation to your skin when it is applied.
Let the lotion cool to room temperature (with the cap off the bottle) before mixing the essential oil. This may take a few hours. Once it is at room temperature, secure the lid on the bottle and shake vigorously for two minutes. This disperses the essential oil throughout the lotion base, thereby completing it.
