How to Make Your Own Spearheads or Arrowheads

Primitive spearheads or arrowheads are often found in ancient caves and other primitive sites. Making weapons that look like they came from the Stone Age is not difficult, but does require a certain amount of precision. Modern techniques and knowledge make it easier to fashion these arrowheads than it was before, but the process can still help to bring our ancient past back to life. Once finished, you can paint the heads or the spears and arrows themselves and decorate them with berries or feathers.

Instructions

    • 1

Find some rock that is appropriate to make your arrow or spearheads out of. For best results, use slate, flint, jasper, quartzite or obsidian.

    • 2

Use your hammer (or another hard instrument, like another rock) to break off a piece of rock to work with. Chip the rock a little at a time until it takes the shape of an arrowhead.

    • 3

Sharpen your head, using another stone. You can choose to leave it somewhat dull for safety reasons if you choose.

    • 4

Split your stick 1/4 inch down the middle and place the arrowhead inside the gap. Tie the head in place with the leather, twine or string.
