How Do You Make Rock Candy Crystals?

Science that tastes good always pleases, and laboratory experiments do not get any sweeter than learning to make your own rock candy. The process of making crystals begins with sugar water. Experiment with different concentrations of sugar in the water to get different size crystals. Diluted sugar water makes very fine and granular crystals, while sugar water boiled down nearly to a syrup makes larger crystals.

Instructions

    • 1
Use a wooden spoon to mix in the sugar.

Dissolve sugar in boiling water on the stove top. Keep the water boiling while you stir with a wooden spoon to make sure all of the sugar is dissolved. Experiment with different concentrations for different crystals. (See Reference 1.)

    • 2

Allow the liquid to cool, then pour the sugar water into a jar or other heat-proof receptacle. (See Reference 2.)

    • 3

Drop a wooden or bamboo skewer into the jar. Trim the skewer if it protrudes from the lid of the jar. (See Reference 2.)

    • 4

Cover the jar with a paper towel and secure it with a rubber band. This keeps dust and bugs out. (See Reference 2.)

    • 5

Place the jar in the sunlight. (See Reference 2.)

    • 6

Wait two weeks for crystals to form on the bamboo stick. (See Reference 2.)
