How to Cut an Industrial Magnet

Magnets used in industrial settings must be more durable and emit more magnetism than the everyday ones you use on your fridge. Compared to the soft and pliable rubberized magnets most people use in their homes, industrial magnets are made from much stronger materials, such as ceramic or magnetite. Coupled with the strength of the materials industrial magnets are composed of, their magnetic force also makes it extremely hard for industrial magnets to be cut. Do not waste your time trying to cut one of these magnets with a regular saw; this will only dull the blade. Instead, use a diamond-plated blade and a dremel to cut an industrial magnet.

Instructions

    • 1
Wear your face mask to protect against inhaling magnetic dust.

Put on your safety goggles, thick gloves and facemask. This will protect you from the magnetic dust that cutting the industrial magnet will produce.

    • 2

Securely attach your vice to a workbench or table.

    • 3

Place the magnet between the two arms of the vice and tighten them until the magnet is securely in place.

    • 4

Draw a line on your magnet with your pencil in the location where you would like to cut.

    • 5

Attach the diamond-abrasive dremel tip onto the end of your dremel.

    • 6

      Plug in your dremel.

    • 7

      Switch on the dremel.

    • 8

Place the spinning dremel bit onto the line you drew on the magnet. Do not apply more than light pressure, as putting too much pressure on it can damage your dremel. As you apply pressure, you will notice dust coming from the area where you are sawing and that an indentation has begun to form on the magnet.

Continue to apply pressure to the magnet with the dremel, until it has cut all the way through.
