Directions to Split Rock

If you are a gem or fossil collector, you likely know that sometimes the best treasures are hidden within larger rocks. These rocks need to be split open before it is possible to get the more valuable pieces inside. Splitting open rocks is not something that can be done with a regular hammer. To properly perform the task, you need specialized geologist's tools, such as a sledge or pick. These tools make the job easier and reduce the chance of accidental injury.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your eye protection, such as safety goggles. Do not attempt to split rock without safety goggles. A piece of rock may fly up and hit you in the eye, causing damage or even blindness. Put on gloves, ideally a pair that is made from tough leather and designed to withstand heavy use.

Use the correct hammer for the job. This depends on the size of the rock you are trying to split. In general, use a hammer that has a pick end to split most rocks. If the rock is very large, a sledgehammer is probably necessary.

    • 3

Grip the hammer firmly, and bring it down on the rock with a large amount of force. If using a sledgehammer, hit the rock until it begins to crack. Then, use the pick end of a hammer to strike the cracked area of the rock. Continue striking the rock until it splits.

Use a chisel to break the split rock into even smaller pieces, if desired. Place the chisel tip on a fractured area of the rock, then strike it with a small hammer to split the rock apart.
