Things You'll Need
Instructions
Fill your gold pan with rocks and sand from a stream bank or from the shallow part of the stream. The pan should be nearly full. It will be heavy. Pick out the large stones by hand.
Allow water from the stream to flow slowly into the pan until you have a thick soupy mix. Work in a calm eddy of the stream, or stand in a shallow part and face downstream.
Mix the material in the pan by hand with the water. Knead the soupy mix to break up any dirt or clay clods.
Holding the pan just above the water, tilt it gently, rolling it in a circle to allow the water to wash away the lighter material. This will include sticks and other debris, as well as lighter minerals and sand. Pour off the top layer of mud, minerals and water gently, then dip the pan in the stream to replenish the water.
Continue to swirl the pan in a gentle circle, dipping it into the water as needed, until all the lighter material has washed away. The heavier black sand and any gold flakes will be left at the bottom.
Pick out the gold flakes with a pair of tweezers and place in a small vial, plastic or glass, with an inch of water in the bottom. Stopper it tightly.
