How to Use an Elementary Spring Scale

A spring scale is a very simple device used to measure the weight of samples in the field. It is often impractical to bring a large, accurate scale into the field. If a truly accurate measurement is required, it is best to bring samples back to the lab. This is not always practical for a variety of reasons; for example, a sample might dry out and lose mass before you can weigh it. Spring scales are useful in these circumstances. They consist of a spring with a hook on the end and markings to indicate how must weight it takes to stretch the spring to that length.

Estimate the weight of your sample by picking it up. Spring scales are rated for specific weight ranges. Choose the scale which you think is best suited to your sample.

    • 2

Hold the spring scale so that the hook is hanging downward. Hang a bag on the hook. If the bag has a measurable weight, write it down. If the object you wish to weigh can be safely hung from the hook, skip this step.

Place your sample in the bag. The spring should be pulled downward. If it isn't, you're using a spring scale which is rated for larger weights. Repeat with a smaller scale. If the spring is stretched all the way down, your sample is too heavy. Select a scale rated for bigger samples.

Wait for the spring to stop moving up and down. Once it stops moving, look at the markings on the side of the scale and record the weight. If necessary, subtract the weight of the bag.
