How to Make a Fake Volcano Eruption

Fake volcanoes are a classic choice for geology and chemistry science experimentation. They demonstrate how volcanoes erupt and are affected by geological formations, as well as how acids and bases interact. A simple one should take approximately 15 minutes to assemble and use, with cleanup requiring an additional 10 minutes. More complex versions can take longer, depending on how detailed you want your volcano to be. Fake volcanoes are best for children in grade 3 or higher, and they don't stop being fun at any age.

Things You'll Need

  • Modeling Clay
  • Empty Soda Can
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • Red food coloring
  • Large mixing bowl or baking pan
  • Funnel

Instructions

    • 1

Place the soda can in the center of the mixing bowl or baking pan. With the funnel, pour the 1/2 cup of baking soda into it to weigh it down. This will contain the "lava" and make cleanup easier.

    • 2

Push modeling clay around the base of the soda can to hold it in place, then add more all around it in a rough cone shape until it comes up to the top of the can. Put 1 to 2 centimeters more on top of the can around the opening, leaving it open.

    • 3

Modify or decorate the outside of your volcano as you wish. Create rivulets or valleys in the side to change how the "lava" flows.

    • 4

Pour a little vinegar through the funnel into the opening on the soda can. Remove it quickly, before the "lava" leaves the soda can. The vinegar, an acid, will react the the baking soda, a base, to create a large amount of carbon dioxide bubbles that will erupt from your volcano as a red foam.

    • 5

When the reaction settles down, add a little more vinegar until all of the vinegar and baking soda are consumed.
