How to Make Salt Crystals Using Epsom Salt

Crystals are lovely natural formations that come in every shape, size and color. Some crystals take thousands of years to form; others can take just a few minutes. Instructions

    • 1

Measure half a cup of water into a small pot or saucepan. Place the pot over a medium heat and bring it to a boil.

    • 2

Take the pot off of the heat and place it on a heat-safe surface. Measure a quarter cup of Epsom salt and pour it into the heated water. Stir the salt in well until it's completely dissolved. For different colored crystals, add food coloring.

    • 3

Place the sponge into the pan and pour the salty water on top of the sponge until the water covers the bottom of the pan. Place the pan in a sunny location where it won't get knocked over and wait for it to dry. The water will evaporate with the heat of the sun, and crystals will form on the sponge and the bottom of the pan.
