Limestone Formation
Limestone is typically formed in shallow marine water environments. It is a sedimentary organic rock that can form from shells and other animal debris. Limestone can also form in caves through evaporation of water that leaves calcium carbonate behind.
Areas
Limestone formations, found in areas around the world, in many cases are remnants of ancient marine life. Limestone is also often found in caves.
Modern Formation
Limestone formation continues in marine areas. Coral, shellfish and algae help create limestone in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf.
