Lifting and Handling Tools
Granite lifting and handling tools are typically made up of a system of straps and suction cups affixed to a strong, reinforced frame. The granite's weight is carried by the straps or suction cups, the load is distributed down into the frame and to the ground through the wheels or casters on which the whole piece is moved.
Cutting and Drilling Tools
Granite is cut with a variety of saws, most of which use a large circular blade (rather like those of miter saws). They typically have a strong electric motor and a diamond-edged blade for cutting through the tough stone. An almost universal feature is the presence of a water or slurry cooling system to prevent the blade from overheating. Drills used with granite are also usually tipped with diamond or carbide and have more powerful motors than those used with wood.
Edging, Grinding, and Sanding
The miters and sanders used to finish granite pieces share many features in common with woodworking tools of similar purpose. They frequently use silicon carbide grit to help deal with the hardness of granite.
Chisels
A variety of chisels may be employed with hammer-drills to break off chunks or chips of granite, helping to carve it into the desired shape.
