The Best Ranked Ground Metal Detectors

Early in the morning, on just about any beach in the United States and beyond, you will find them sweeping back and forth on the beach hoping to find lost treasure. Metal detectors are used by hobbyists in search of something valuable. Some detectors are better than others, but to find the best you are going to have to consider features once considered just bells and whistles, but now considered essential.
  1. Garrett Treasure Ace

    • The Ace is one of the best-ranked ground metal detectors. There are a number of different models available of the Treasure Ace, including the 250 and the 1000. Garrett Metal Detectors, named for Charles Garrett, the electrical engineer who designed and built metal detectors out of his home, is one of the top manufacturers of cutting-edge metal detection devices. While the Ace is an easy-to-use device, if your purpose for purchasing the detector is finding gold, you may want to consider another model. If you are looking for a detector to use on beach sand or in the water itself, the Ace is not the model you want. Purchase one of Garrett's Land and Sea models and expect to pay a much higher price.

    White's Spectra V3i

    • Coins are the likely "find" of the avid treasure hunter.

White's Company has been selling metal detectors for the last four decades. Their latest model, the Spectra V3i, has several new additions that make for a unique treasure hunting experience. SpectraSound Wireless Headphones mean avoiding hangups and disconnecting the headphones when you are hunting at a faster pace.

The Spectra features a large color screen display with improved depth detection for quick finds. The coin detector will display either penny, dime, nickel or quarter and give the depth of the coin. If the object is jewelry, the display will indicate as such with a ring icon. With several size options for the search coils ranging from 5.3 inches to 12 inches, you can choose to scan larger areas with each pass of the detector. Another option for search coils is the Excelerator coils that penetrate the ground deeper than the regular search coils. A Quick Reference Guide is built into the radar screen to allow you to read directions as you operate the detector.

    Bounty Hunter Quick Draw

    • Jewelry or gold is the preferred "find" of the avid treasure hunter.

The Bounty Hunter detectors are much maligned amongst the metal detecting communities as a "toy." These are the models that are sold at WalMart under the model name Pioneer 202. It is a relatively cheap model; as of December 2010, it was priced under $200. For someone who is just starting out in using detectors, this model may be the best option. The training DVD that comes with the detector explains the use of the detection process and discrimination feature to tell coins from aluminum pop tops. More expensive detectors have fine-tuned the discrimination features and have better display screens, but for someone just trying to see if they actually enjoy the hobby, it's best to save some money on the first detector. This detector comes with a nice carrying bag for keeping all the pieces together. It is not recommended for the detection of gold or for use in wet areas.
