How to Use a Minerals Graphic Organizer

Examining mineral specimens in the classroom is an excellent way to engage students in the learning process. Graphic organizers are valuable tools for ESL (English as a second language) students, students with learning disabilities, or any student needing help with organization before writing. The use of a graphic organizer provides students with a way to assimilate their mineral notes that can be used as a writing outline. A specific type of graphic organizer, called a spider map, is very useful for organizing information about individual mineral specimens.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide students with a mineral specimen and a copy of the spider map. This type of graphic organizer is commonly referred to as a spider map because it resembles a spider when completed. The central idea, in this case a specific mineral, is written in the middle circle that looks like the spider's body. The related information is then written on lines coming from the central idea and will look similar to a spider's legs.

    • 2

Discuss the different types of mineral information you want students to list on the spider map. Chemical formulae, common names, mineral streak, commercial uses, color variations, methods of formation, textures, hardness, crystal types and geographic locations where the mineral might be found are examples of information students might be interested in.

    • 3

Demonstrate how to use the streak plate and glass plate before providing these materials to students. These items are generally safe to use but can be easily broken if not handled carefully.

    • 4

Allow students time to use the hand lens, streak plate, glass plate and other reference materials to gather information about their mineral. Textbooks, mineral guides and Web-based resources are all excellent sources of detailed information that students can utilize. Students should record this information on their spider map as they work.

    • 5

Instruct students to write a summary paragraph about their mineral once their spider map is complete. Each "leg" of the spider should be used to create one or two sentences. Some students might have difficulty logically organizing their paragraph and will need assistance.
