How to Remove Gold Flakes From Quartz

Gold is where you find it--which is a somewhat irritating quote if you've just spent a hot day in the desert looking for it. Gold does associate with some minerals. One of them is quartz, a crystalline type of rock that sometimes has gold trapped between its layers. You can remove gold from quartz yourself, easily and safely.

Things You'll Need

  • Gold panning pan
  • Mortar and pestle
  • Tub of water
  • Eye dropper
  • Safety glasses

Instructions

    • 1

Place the quartz specimens in the mortar. Use the pestle to break off a couple of small pieces.

    • 2

Break up the small pieces into small grains of rock. The finer, the better. Gold doesn't break or shatter. It will just flatten out. You must try to release the gold from between layers or what may be attached to the surface.

    • 3

Scoop about 1/2 cup of crushed rock into the pan and swirl it around in the traditional panning method to suspend the material on the surface while the heavier gold sinks to the bottom. Collect the gold into a bottle using an eye dropper.
