Rock Polishing Tools

Rock collecting is a hobby that many people enjoy, and polishing rocks serves many purposes. The beauty of the rock is exposed when the dirt and debris is removed, it may be easier to identify when clean, and in many cases polishing the rock can increase its value for resale.
  1. Sandpaper

    • Polishing a rock can start with something as simple as sandpaper. Start with a low level grit sandpaper and then increase the grit of the sandpaper as needed. This helps to sand away imperfections as well as to remove stuck-on dirt and debris.

    Shine

    • Shining up your rock find is easy to do with a damp piece of leather or velvet and some polishing powder. Make sure to polish by rubbing the rock in small circles with the velvet and polishing powder.

    Vibrating Flat Lap

    • A vibrating flat lap is a pan which holds water, grit, and then your rocks on the top. It vibrates the rock in stages, ending with a fine polish.

    Rock Tumbler

    • A rock tumbler works just as the name suggests, by tumbling rock with fine grit until it is polished. The rock tumbler does the job that you can do by hand with the sandpaper, as it increases the grit as it works to polish the rock. Follow the instructions on your rock tumbler to judge the amount of time that you will need to complete the project.
