Cool Earth Science Projects

A science project themed around the planet Earth works well for a school science fair project or a craft celebrating Earth Day. You can use some basic household items you may already have on hand to complete a slew of Earth science projects, which is an environmentally friendly solution and saves money to boot.
  1. Jar Garden

    • Creating a small jar garden is a simple way to chart how plant life grows. Fill some old baby food or jam jars with soil and drop in a few seeds to each one. Keep a journal charting which plants grow at what speed, and try different environments to determine what habitat works best for plant life. For example, does the jar that is outside near the sun and open to rain water grow quicker than the jar that is in the shade and receives less rain water?

    Aluminum Cooker

    • Make an aluminum cooker and test the strength of the sun's rays during different times of day. Cover the inside and outside of a shoe box with aluminum foil then set it outside to warm in the sun. At different times throughout the day try to cook different items and chart how successful you are depending on where the sun is. For instance, you can compare how quickly you can fry an egg at 11 a.m. as opposed to 2 p.m.

    Bird Feeder

    • A bird feeder project can test what habitats work best for attracting different animals. Take an old orange juice carton and fill it with different items to see what type of animal life you attract. Use items like peanut butter, seeds, nuts and dishes of water and study what creatures are drawn to each feeder. Keep a journal tracking the squirrels, birds and butterflies and how often they visit to determine the foods each species prefers.
