What Is Mineral Rock Salt?

The mineral rock salt is an impure version of halite which is actually sodium chloride (NaCl) commonly known as table salt. It usually has some gypsum and purite in it but not usually Potassium.
  1. Formation

    • Halite forms when sea water evaporates because sea water contains Na+ and Cl- ions. It usually forms and is found in dry lake beds, inland seas, and estuaries and bays in the arid world. They are also found in places where old seas used to be such as where the Tethys sea used to be in what is now the Mediterranean sea.

    Uses

    • Rock salt is used as table salt, and is also used on icy surfaces to prevent them from freezing up.

    Importance

    • Halite is important to humans because they need a small amount of it. It is also important for the ocean because it helps to regulate their salt content.
