What Is Danburite Used For?

Danburite was discovered in 1839 near Danbury, Conn. Made up of silicates, the stone has properties similar to quartz. Deposits of danburite have been discovered and mined in Burma, Japan, Madagascar and Mexico. The mineral is relatively common in smaller sizes but is more rare as a large stone.
  1. Jewelry

    • According to the International Gem Society, danburite "makes an excellent jewelry stone that surpasses quartz and rivals topaz in brilliance." But the same group says the mineral lacks "fire," a term used to describe a stone's color flecks after it is cut. Danburite is used to make a variety of jewelry, from earrings and necklaces to bracelets and rings.

    Crystal

    • Individuals who practice chakra, a spiritual energy in humans, prize danburite as a healing crystal that purportedly helps strengthen clarity and perception. These individuals believe the mineral has properties that amplify the effects and properties of other crystals.

    Limitations

    • Danburite is susceptible to heat, which may limit its potential. Heat, even through the steam-cleaning process used on other jewelry, seems to add some discoloration to the mineral.
